Sensory Diet and Transition
This is an example of a sensory activity (vestibular-based activity) used (again, because we know this child very well to know what it is he needs to calm and regulate him before a difficult task). After he receives his vestibular stimulation, he is able to reference his schedule and sit to show readiness for the next activity. In the past that next activity has been one that has been difficult for him to transition to.
Math Exercise
Students practice their multiplication tables before math lesson to activate their brains and prime them for math class. In this exercise, introduced to us by Nancy Rowe, developer of Neuronet, the students must change the position of their upper bodies between multiplication problems. While the student does the drill, another keeps time (encouraging the ability to inhibit and to wait) and the other checks that the teacher is putting the cards in the correct pile (encouraging the ability to process quickly). Once the 1-minute drill is over, the next student has a turn, and the roles change.
